BECOMING A MEMBER
“If you can be a Christian you can be a Presbyterian.”
It has been said many times and in different settings
What is required?
*confess your Christian faith,
*believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,
*promise to live life patterned after Jesus and the Gospels,
*commitment to attend church and become involved in its work.
Here’s how: You can become part of the Riverside church family by: Baptism, Profession of Faith, Reaffirmation of Faith, or Letter of Transfer.
1. Baptism
2. Profession of Faith, for those without any prior membership in
any church.* Making this commitment requires one to have
received The Sacrament of Baptism.**
3. Reaffirmation of Faith, the method used when an individual
has become inactive. As well as when other denominations and
independent churches do not offer transfers of membership.***
4. Transfer of Letter, when an individual is currently a member in
another congregation and requests Riverside Church to contact
(on their behalf) their prior church.
When is membership confirmed? Reception is celebrated during a service of worship when the church family gathers to offer praise and thanksgiving for Almighty God’s forgiveness, love and grace.
*Young Inquirers, ages 12 years and up are prepared for this charge through a course normally taught by the minister, or a church elder.
**The Sacrament of Baptism, a major emphasis for membership. Baptism is celebrated in worship by the minister and congregation. It is administered to infants whose parents are Presbyterians; to infants, their parents, and other young people and adults who are making their Profession of Faith as they join the church.
***Adult Bible Study, conducted by the minister on Sundays from 9:45 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. The group explores Biblical priorities for our Christian faith and practice. The class is open to friends and neighbors, as well as members.
